Reading in ESL

Event Type: Adults
Date: 9/16/2019
Start Time: 6:00 PM
End Time: 8:00 PM
For ESL learners, literacy in English is not only an important goal of language study, it is also a means to higher levels of language proficiency. We’ll look at different levels of text comprehensibility to see where the sweet spot is for readers to feel successful and for reading to become a path to learning.

Research shows that developing an independent reading ‘habit’ is a powerful way to build fluency, vocabulary, and writing skills. We will consider available reading materials and brainstorm how to make them accessible and how to get our ESL learners into the reading habit.
