Language Acquisition: From Zero to Literacy

Event Type: Adults
Date: 5/1/2019
Start Time: 9:30 AM
End Time: 11:30 AM
We are all capable of acquiring language. Teaching for acquisition allows us to use time and resources efficiently to give students a foundation from which they can become independent language learners.

As tutors interact with learners, student interests and responses help drive conversations – in the target language. Language acquisition is the goal, but the personal interactions and relationships formed keep students (and teachers) engaged and motivated.

In this workshop, story-based language coach Anny Ewing, will demonstrate specific comprehension-focused techniques, while participants play the role of language learners. After the demo, participants will reflect on the ‘learner’ experience and how these techniques can be applied in an ESL setting.

This workshop is made possible through the American Dream Literacy Initiative, a grant offering of the American Library Association, made possible by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation.
